Research In Motion (RIMM) Set to Launch 'Blackpad' Tablet in November
Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), the makers of the popular BlackBerry smartphone line, is reportedly planning to introduce a tablet computer in November.
The new device will reportedly be called the “Blackpad,” as the company acquired the rights to blackpad.com earlier this month.
RIM is looking to jump into the tablet computer market, which is nascent but already heavily dominated by Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and its iPad.
Reports said that the RIM device will have similar dimensions to the iPad, with a 9.7 inch touch screen, and will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth connectivity will allow a user to access the internet through their BlackBerry smartphone.
RIM is pushing to get this device out according to Bloomberg, but they will already be well behind the success of the iPad at launch, as Apple has already sold more than 3 million of its tablet devices in the U.S. over just three months.
Sources have also suggested that the device’s price will be inline with the iPad, which starts at $499, as RIM is looking to sell devices in volume on par with Apple while not engaging the company in a price war.
RIM is also set to unveil its BlackBerry 9800 slider phone on August 3; the new phone will sport a full touchscreen with a hidden Qwerty keyboard for easier typing.
Shares of RIM are up 3.5% to $57.61 with less than an hour left in this week's trading session.
