Removal of Iconic Yahoo! (YHOO) Billboard Marks End of an Era

Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) is becoming less of an icon in San Francisco.

According to a local report from the The San Francisco Egoist, Yahoo! has lowered it's billboard in San Francisco that had been an iconic image for the company over the last 12 years, appearing just as motorists approached the Bay Bridge.

Clear Channel Outdoor (NYSE: CCO), which owns the property, confirmed the move.

On the downside, the classical sign which mimicked the best parts of the "Welcome to Las Vegas" billboard will mark the end of an era. Not that Yahoo! is going away soon, necessarily, but that the sign was posted in 1999, before anyone ever heard of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Wintel was still the biggest thing going. The only game available on your mobile was "Hungry Snake."

On the upside, Yahoo! will be saving itself about $780,000 per year in ad costs. According to Clear Channel, it will look to lease the billboard space out for $65,000 per month. Yahoo! said it's looking into "new and innovative ways" to market itself, on spokesperson today the San Jose Mercury News.

With word that Yahoo! is looking to shed some of its Alibaba stake, the sale of it's most iconic billboard shouldn't come as a surprise to some.

Shares of Yahoo! are trading 1.4 percent better Thursday.
