Regeneron (REGN) Lower as Germany's IQWiG Questions Eylea's Effectiveness

January 2, 2014 2:24 PM EST
Regeneron (Nasdaq: REGN) is lower Thursday following news that the effectiveness of Eylea, its collaboration with Bayer HealthCare, is being questioned in a key European market.

Reuters said that the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) was unable to determine whether or not Eylea was superior to Novartis' (NYSE: NVS) Lucentis as a treatment for macular edema. The committee said trials for Eylea and Lucentis weren't comparable because neither drug was being administered the way regulators specified.

Germany's medical cost-benefit agency G-BA will publish its cost-benefit analysis on Eylea within the next three months, though Bayer expects to issue a response within three weeks.
