RIM (RIMM) May Not Call Next-Gen Phones BBX Anymore...

Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) has a ton of patents and trademarks...but they missed one.

According to reports, RIM lost a suit over usage of the BBX name, which it planned for the next-generation of its smartphone lineup. The call, made by a judge in New Mexico, is only a temporary ban.

The current owner of the BBX trademark, BASIS International, probably would take a cash prize, but RIM has already ceded, adopting the name of BlackBerry 10 for it's new devices. Whether or not it will continue to pursue the name was not made clear by RIM, according to the WSJ.

In a statement following the ruling, BASIS said, "The BBX mark is identical to the mark which RIM is allegedly using to present its BBX product...and despite the fact that the two companies are not direct competitors, the parties' respective BBX products are highly related and target the same class of consumers, that is, business application software developers."

RIM is floating between positive and negative territory Wednesday.

Notably, according to its website, BASIS bills itself as: "big and stable enough to be a reliable partner with thousands of companies all over the world, yet small and flexible enough to deliver customized solutions to meet today's business challenges." (Emphasis theirs.)

Coincidentally, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is also reported to have lost a trademark suit for it's 'iPad' name in China. Click here for more color.
