RIM (RIMM) Eyes Rapid Expansion in Second-Largest Wireless Market
Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) is looking to make a stronger presence in emerging markets with the introduction of lower-priced devices.
According to reports out Wednesday, RIM is launching its BlackBerry Curve 9220 in India with a starting price of 10,990 rupees (about $210). RIM has billed the device as the "most affordable" BlackBerry smartphone its offered in the region.
The offer also comes with a deal to download about $50 worth of apps.
Launch of the device is expected on Thursday.
The specs aren't bad: the Curve 9220 runs on a 2G network, has dedicated buttons for FM radio and BB Messenger, and also includes a 2-megapixel camera.
Despite losing gobs of market share in the U.S. and Europe, RIM has gained a 15 percent of the Indian market, with peer Nokia (NYSE: NOK) boasting a 38 percent share. Speaking of which, Nokia shares are notably lower early Wednesday following the RIM headlines.
India is said to have 900 million mobile subs, though smartphone subs in the market are just about 54 million. India is the second-largest wireless market in the world behind China.
Shares of RIM are 0.2 percent lower Wednesday morning.
