RIM's BlackBerry Now Top Smartphone Choice for UK's Teenagers

August 2, 2010 2:26 PM EDT
An article in the UK's Guardian today said that Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry is the smartphone of choice for Britain's youth -- mostly due to an affordable price and reasonable monthly plans. The article makes the argument that, although Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone stores music better, many youths have an iPod for that. BlackBerry's messenger service, cleverly named BlackBerry Messenger, provides a cheaper alternative for quickly messaging their friends while traveling about. The article notes that the BlackBerry costs about £25 per month with free internet and texts, compared to £30 for an Apple which also has an introductory price tag of £200 - £300.

RIMM shares are down modestly today ahead of an expected conference from the BlackBerry maker tomorrow.
