Qualcomm (QCOM) Counters Samsung With Its Own Smartwatch

September 4, 2013 2:09 PM EDT
Shortly after Samsung announced that it was releasing a new smartwatch device in its "Galaxy Gear," Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) doesn't want to be left out of the loop.

Speaking at Uplinq 2013, Qualcomm CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs said that the company would be unveiling its own smartwatch in Toq.

Features of the Qualcomm Toq include always-on screen and wireless charging. The device will also be able to let the user manage calls, receive text messages, and get calendar notifications from a connected device.

The move comes as Qualcomm sees the world moving into wearable electronic devices and it is aiming to demonstrate what its chip and display technology is capable of achieving.

Samsung's "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch has and 1.63-inch AMOLED display, 320 x 320 resolution, 800-megahertz processor, 1.9-megapixel camera, speaker, 4-GB of memory, low-power Bluetooth, and more.

Both Qualcomm and Samsung have outpaced names like Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), and others to the smart wristwatch game. Speculators peg Apple releasing a similar device in early- to mid-2014.

Shares of Qualcomm are up over 1 percent Wednesday.
