Dow Jones is reporting that Brazilian miner, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (NYSE: RIO), or Vale, for short, today announced that protesters have blocked a key rail line linking mines in Minas Gerais to its port operations in Tubarao.
Protests by Indian tribes and other groups have become a somewhat normal occurance for Vale: earlier this year 500 protesters blocked the Estrada de Ferro Carajas and in March 600 members of the Rural Landless Workers Movement blocked the Vitoria-Minas railroad line.
Today's protest marks a smaller demonstration as only about 300 protesters caused a halt in transit on the railroad line. Vale said that about 30 iron ore and cargo cars were affected by the protesters.
Despite a possible slowdown in production, investors are buying shares of Vale today. The stock is up about $0.31, or 0.9%, to $34.75.
