Playboy (PLA) Launches the 'Safe for Work' TheSmokingJacket.com

Playboy (NYSE: PLA) today launched TheSmokingJacket.com, a so-called safe-for-work website that will include the articles that all men claim to read the iconic adult magazine for, but generally skip over... for obvious reasons.

When considering that the company has never been able to gain even a fraction of the Internet world that it had in the adult publication forum, sounds like this could be the next big flop from Playboy Enterprises.

Categories on the new site include Girls, Entertainment, Sex, Videos and Lifestyle. The new web destination will also compile funny videos from around the Internet, and non-nude photos from Playboy’s archive.

"TheSmokingJacket.com is the ultimate safe-for-work Internet experience for men, and a one-stop shop for all that is cool online," said Jimmy Jellinek, Chief Content Office and Editorial Director of Playboy and Playboy.com. "Cube dwellers and office drones alike shall rejoice at this fun, sexy, satirical antidote to the drudgery of the work day."

This Web site is being billed as "safe-for-work", however, right in the middle of the page in huge bold print is an article entitled “7 Signs That You’ve Given Up on Getting Laid.” Not sure that is appropriate for the everyday workplace. Not to mention the side story headlined, “How to Get Laid at Work.”

"A lot of our audience logs on (to Playboy.com) after work and we saw that we were missing a golden opportunity to reach guys when they're online the most: when they're sitting at their desk, not working, sending e-mails to their friends," said Jellinek.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, 84, has recently made a bid to take the company private; just days later, the board received another proposal letter from FriendFinder Networks Inc., the owner of Penthouse.

Shares of Playboy are trading up a penny to $5.35 today.
