PayPal (EBAY) to German Users: You've Won 500 EUR...Not!

It seems like Verifone (NYSE: PAY) might be having the worst week of all mobile payment providers, given weak results an guidance released on Wednesday. Buy, you'd be wrong.

TheNextWeb points out eBay's (Nasdaq: EBAY) PayPal. The German unit of the transaction processor erroneously issued an email to all eligible users in an upcoming drawing that they had won the €500 jackpot. All the user had to do was log-in to their PayPal account to get the price.

Unfortunately, there was no money when users logged in. A translated messaged was issued, reading (per Bing translation): "Unfortunately, this e-mail has been sent due to a technical error. For this we apologize. The draw has not yet taken place. We just identify the transactions of our customers who are eligible. Then it will be our raffle among the eligible customers and the winners will be notified in a separate e-mail."

It wasn't made clear how many users received the message, or whether some might file litigation against PayPal. (We're guessing there are waivers in user agreements to protect against this sort of thing.)

Shares of eBay are still up on the session, about 0.4 percent into positive territory.
