According to the New York Times, AARP is launching its own "custom digital player" on its web site, aimed at the large Baby Boomers segment.
The service was launched last month on the site, with no pomp and circumstance accompanying the move. AARP hopes to capture the 50-and-over crowd with its streamer.
Concord Music Group is the programmer for the service, which will play everything from Paul Simon to Paul McCartney. The 18 channels will have about 500 songs in rotation each. Concord said it expects to integrate newer music, from artists like Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkston, with oldies.
The service will be free to AARP members, and be paid though advertising, which AARP and Concord will split.
Pandora (NYSE: P), which had it's IPO last month, could see increased competition from the move. While the company draws sales from over 100 million users globally, the AARP's reach of a specific demographic -- Boomers numbering in the 37 million range -- Pandora and Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iTunes may see a slight drop should AARP's service catch on.
