According to reports from the UK's Guardian, Orange, the mobile network operator for the massive France Telecom (NYSE: FTE), is considering removing Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry Bold from its device line-up due to persistent problems with the handset.
Recent sources are indicating that Research In Motion's Bold has seen uncharacteristically high return rates, as well as numerous end-user complaints related to dropped calls and poor reception. Completely dropping the BlackBerry device would be the next step along the road, as Orange decided to stop shipping the handset in October due to similar reasons. Despite several patches aimed at fixing software issues, however, user-complaints remain.
As the Guardian article points out, the issues with the Bold bring to attention problems with another Research In Motion device, the Storm. BlackBerry's first-ever touchscreen mobile phone, the new Storm initially received wide-spread enthusiasm, but as users became familiar with the device, troubles were spotted, including software glitches and extremely slow load times.
Shares of Research In Motion are moving higher today with the broader markets. The stock is currently up 2.22% to $41.48 despite the concerning article.
Research In Motion Limited engages in the design, manufacture, and marketing of wireless solutions for the mobile communications market worldwide.
