In an interview with CBS's Charlie Rose, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Chairman and co-founder Bill Gates said the company’s CEO Steve Ballmer hasn't done enough.
"He and I are two of the most self-critical people - you can imagine," said Gates. "There were a lot of amazing things that Steve's leadership got done with the company last year... Is it enough? No. He and I are not satisfied that, in terms of breakthrough things, that we're doing everything possible."
Ballmer has been CEO at Microsoft since 2000, a staggeringly long lifespan considering the company's faltering tech leadership and the stock's lackluster performance. Microsoft shares have dropped 45 percent since Ballmer took office and criticism is intense. In the past he has been accused of, among other failures, maintaining his grip on control by forcing out challengers.
Gate's comment and his revelations about Ballmer's own apparent negative self assessment are not likely to silence critics. Gates also admitted the company made mistakes in mobile.
Shares of Microsoft are up 0.8 percent to $28.01.
