Nokia (NOK) Spurned Intel (INTC) with Dumping MeeGo; Otellini Responds

When Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) announced one week ago that it would adopt Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows Phone 7 for its smartphone line, the MeeGo joint venture with Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) was dropped.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that this was simply a financial decision by Nokia head man Stephen Elop, but the microprocessor maker will continue to be committed to MeeGo.

"Between Microsoft and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), he (Elop) was getting incredible offers [of] money," Otellini said.

Otellini said that he would not sell himself to the highest bidder the way Nokia has, and would have stayed committed to MeeGo, adding that Elop actually made the wrong choice twice.

"I probably would have gone to Android if I were him," Otellini said. "MeeGo would have been the best strategy for him, but he concluded he couldn't afford it."

The Intel CEO added that Nokia will have trouble creating a market for itself with WP7, and theat Intel will simply find other partners for MeeGo.
