Nokia (NYSE: NOK) debuted its new, photo-friendly Lumia 1020 smartphone on Thursday. But, will it be successful?

Bloomberg Industries sees challenges. The firm noted that Nokia might be limiting itself with releasing the device on just one carrier, AT&T (NYSE: T), at the start. One of the biggest bumps in the road for success of the Lumia 1020 is Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone. Still largely popular in the U.S., the iPhone generally accounts for about 56 percent to 84 percent of AT&T's total smartphone sales at any given time. That's the highest of any carrier, for those keeping score at home.

In addition, Nokia will need to train U.S. sales staff on the Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 operating system, which could be an impediment to momentum.

Pricing of the Lumia 1020 is $299.99 with new two-year contract, which is the same price of an upper-end iPhone. Though memory and specs put the Lumia 1020 on a similar plane as the iPhone, most consumers aren't likely to see it that way.

It wasn't made clear yesterday or today when the Lumia 1020 might begin to be sold on other carriers.

With Apple likely to release a new iPhone in September sometime, Nokia has just a few short months to capture as much attention at AT&T stores as possible. That's a challenge given that summer in the U.S. isn't exactly the hottest time to be selling consumer electronics. Apple has it pegged just right with its product releases: early autumn so people can gear-up for the holiday season and mid-spring for just after all the holiday bills have come under control and just before weather breaks enough for people to start wanting to spend more time outside and away from electronics.

Shares of Nokia are down 1.7 percent early Friday.
