Nokia (NYSE: NOK) may have been berated in the past for skipping over Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS in favor Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone, but that all might change in 2012.
According to reports Wednesday, Nokia's French Chief Paul Amsellem said Nokia plans to release a Windows 8-based tablet in the summer of 2012. Amsellen made the statement to French news source Les Echos on Tuesday.
Mentioned earlier in 2011, Windows 8 is expected to be more tablet friendly than any previous offering from Microsoft. The operating system will take cues from it's Windows Phone design, and offer users easy to identify and organize boxes for navigation and apps.
One hiccup investors might be mulling is the potential costs to support two different operating systems. Though Windows Phone and Windows 8 are likely to share some coding and structure, applications and processes will need to be specifically designed on each system.
Nokia is still on top of the world smartphone stage -- but losing ground quickly. The Finnish mobile device OEM recently divested its Symbian operating system, and eschewed both MeeGo and Android for Microsoft, but only recently debuted it's new Windows Phone offerings. With Windows 8 getting some early positive reviews, the new tablet might just be a boon for investors.
