Nokia (NOK) Plans Giant Smartphone for Release This Year

August 19, 2013 2:43 PM EDT
As Samsung continues cranking out larger and larger smartphones, one competitor appears to refuse being left behind.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is planning to release a smartphone with a 6-inch display sometime before the end of 2013, TheVerge said today. The handset, codenamed "Bandit," will have 1080p resolution, have a rear-facing camera with 20-megapixel display, run Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 platform, and use a Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) Snapdragon processor. The device will have a modest bump to accommodate the larger camera, but it wasn't made clear whether it will be a Carl Zeiss or not.

Larger smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy Note series, are referred to as phablets.

Chatter of a bigger smartphone comes as the market is expecting Nokia to unveil a media table sometime soon. The tablet is said to run Windows RT, have a 10.1-inch display, and be out next month.

Along with the larger smartphone, Nokia will also bring its Lumia 925 to a wider variety of carriers. Currently, the successor to the Lumia 920 is only available on Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ).

Shares of Nokia are modestly lower Monday.
