Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is indicated lower Monday morning amid rumors that the Finnish mobile device giant is exploring the possibility of creating a brand new tablet device with OS partner Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT).
At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said, "We look very closely at what is coming out of Microsoft in terms of Windows 8...We are very, very pleased with the consistency of the user experience that is coming from the Windows phone and moving up onto tablets and slates and PCs as Windows 8. So we look at those things and say, boy, if there’s a family opportunity there, that’s something we’ll look at very carefully," according to the NY Times.
The news comes as Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is rumored to be unveiling its third iPad model sometime in early March, as big box retailer Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) is cutting the price on the current iPad 2 model to make room for the new device. Apple's iPad has been the segment leader since its debut in 2010, with little competition putting up a formidable fight.
Shares of Nokia are over 5 percent lower in early trading.
