Nokia (NOK) Looks to Lower Handset Costs with Cheaper Chipsets

According to Digitimes Tuesday, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is in talks with Taiwan-based MediaTek and MStar Semi for chipset solutions used in 2.5G and 2.75G handsets. Orders for the chips should hit by the second half of 2012.
Both MediaTek and MStar specialize in the design and development of low-cost chips and handset solutions, Digitimes noted.
This isn't the first time Nokia has contacted the duo; Nokia has been in talks with MediaTek and MStar since 2010, but those dissolved when required ROI came in lower than expectations.
With over 1 billion 2.5G and 2.75G chipsets built to date, MediaTek appears to be the favorite amongst the two.
Nokia shares are flirting with the unchanged level about a half hour after the opening bell. The stock last traded at $5.09.
