If you can't beat 'em, then take 'em down a peg or two. Right, Nokia?
According to tech news source IDG, a spokesperson for Nokia (NYSE: NOK) said Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) offer for "royalty-free nano-SIM is an empty promise, because the company doesn't have any essential patents related to its nano-SIM proposal."
Both Nokia and Apple are submitting proposals for the next-generation micro SIM cards, which will be voted on by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) on Thursday.
According to FOSS Patents, Apple sent a letter to ETSI saying it wanted to ease concerns it might own the patents through "an unequivocal commitment to grant royalty-free licenses to any Apple patents essential to nano-SIM, provided that Apple's proposal is adopted as a standard and that all other patent holders accept the same terms in accordance with the principle of reciprocity."
The royalty-free proposal would give Apple a leg-up in getting its standard approved. The Nokia spokesperson, as mentioned above, downplayed this, saying the company wasn't aware of any intellectual property Apple held for nano-SIM and the effort is only devaluing the IP of others.
Ahead of the bell, Apple shares are indicated lower while Nokia is looking exceptionally strong.
