Nokia (NOK) CEO Elop: We're 'Clearly' Looking to Produce Tablets

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has bigger plans for its Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows-based mobile device offerings.
According to CEO Stephen Elop, in an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Nokia is planning to release a tablet device within the next months or years. Elop didn't formally announce anything, but commented that it was something that Nokia is "clearly looking at very closely."
Elop said that Nokia is studying Microsoft's Surface tablets for some guidance on its own devices. He noted that there were benefits to a 7-inch model as well as a larger tablet.
On whether Nokia would go with a Microsoft operating system or possibly Google's Android operating system, Elop hinted at Microsoft but an attending PR guy said the Nokia hasn't made a decision on which operating system would work best.
Nokia's move comes as Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Android-based tablets continue to enjoy the lions share of the market. Microsoft's Surface line and other Windows 8-based tablets have yet to make a notable mark.
Elop was in Australia as Nokia plans to release its Lumia 920 smartphone in the market sometime in the middle of February. Shares are down 3.6 percent on the session Monday.
