Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) has decided to push back the delivery of its upcoming flagship smartphone another few weeks, as the company said it needs additional time to tweak the device before the launch.
The N8 smartphone was originally scheduled to be released later this month, but will be pushed back into October. The company did not indicate what needs to be done to get ready for the launch, only saying that it needs to ensure the best user experience.
"In some markets, we had planned to start delivering the Nokia N8 to our pre-order customers by the end of September," Nokia said in an emailed statement, according to media reports. "To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends."
Nokia indicated that preorders for the N8 exceeded its expectations, and the company has signed up 100 wireless operators to offer it.
Nokia has struggled in the smartphone market to keep up with rivals Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), and the company's shares have fallen sharply.
The N8 will have a 12-megapixel camera and will be high-definition video capabilities. The device will retail for at €370 ($482) in Europe.
Shares of Nokia are down 2.92 percent to $9.97 in premarket trade on Tuesday.
