Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG) and MAKO Surgical (Nasdaq: MAKO) are leaders when it comes to robotic surgical procedures, but strong competition is lurking just around the corner.
Engadget points out today that a team from the Tokyo Institute of Technology is testing a refining what might be the next generation of surgical robots. The device -- called IBIS -- uses pneumatic controls, meaning it is able to deliver greater sensitivity to surgeon's hands, which could lead to lower mistakes being made. In addition, the device will cost one-third to one-tenth that of what Intuitive Surgical is charging for its da Vinci robot.
Plenty of time still exists for both companies to make a move; IBIS won't be ready for four to five years, the students said.
