Next Apple (AAPL) iPhone Could See 50% Jump in Camera Resolution

April 16, 2013 8:25 AM EDT
Chatter over Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) new iPhone is heating up, with today's rumor now pointing to a higher-resolution camera.

Reports have the next iPhone sporting a 12-megapixel camera, versus an 8-MP version on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. The rumor, cited by CNET, comes from Vietnamese blog Tinte, so it might be taken with a couple spoonfuls of salt. (CNET, however, cites several specific reasons why the blog is a solid source. Items include getting an iPhone 4 and the new EarPods ahead of launch.)

But, Apple will need to put a little more firepower into its camera. Competitors like Nokia (NYSE: NOK), HTC, and others have put time and effort into specific marketing campaigns highlighting the superiority of their cameras versus peers. More and more tech blogs also take picture quality as one of the primary factors in overall smartphone performance, given consumers apprehension to carry around a separate camera with them at all times.

Apple is indicated higher Tuesday morning.
