Next Apple (AAPL) iPad to Take Page from iPad Mini Playbook

August 12, 2013 9:12 AM EDT
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) generally strives to make each successive handheld device thinner and lighter than the previous version and the next iPad will be no exception.

The WSJ said over the weekend that Apple's new iPad will utilize the same technology as found in the iPad mini. Unlike glass-based touch panels, the iPad mini uses a film-based version, allowing for a slimmer profile.

Film-based panels have overcome some shortcomings and are now a viable options to glass-based panels. With Apple being one of the largest device makers in the world, the decision to use the technology will have a positive impact on suppliers and will likely spread to other, non-Apple devices in the coming months.

Apple is up in early trading Monday.
