DigiTimes reporting Thursday LCD panel makers are experiencing difficulties incorporating a touchscreen option into new ultra-thin models as the panels themselves are only 5.5-5.6 millimeters thick.
Currently Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Asustek have been able to produce notebooks which have panels less than 5.5 millimeters thick, but if the company has plans to include a touchscreen display, the overall model size would have to be larger. Some of the additional components needed to add a touchscreen function include IC controllers and flexible flat cables.
Reports earlier this week suggested Dell (NYSE: DELL) and Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) are expected to release new ultra-thin books sometime between the end of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012.
