More bad news for the next Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox and/or Sony (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation?
According to a release Monday morning, ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) debuted its new processor lineup for tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs: Mali-T600 Series GPUs. What will they do?
Well, the models -- which include quad-core T624 and eight-core scalable T628 and T678 -- will increase graphics performance by 50 percent without any further power use.
Engadget noted that ARM in the past said the explicit aim is to deliver "console-class gaming," in addition to 60 frames per second (fps) display rates on smartphones. As a reminder, only high-end HDTVs broadcast at 60 fps, the rest are about half that (though different progressive scans give different results).
Then again, Microsoft might not be out quite yet. The first round of its Surface tablets will feature ARM-based chips (NVIDIA's (Nasdaq: NVDA) Tegra 3). That sort of relationship might put Microsoft in the front of the line if it ever decided to produce a stand-alone smart TV or smartphone.
ARM shares are 0.9 percent better Monday afternoon.
