Netflix (NFLX) Sees Pirated Content as Way to Determine Future Purchases

September 16, 2013 9:34 AM EDT
Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) has been largely successful in subscriber retention, but how does it decide on which content to go after next?

CNET noted that Netflix might be using content piracy sites to gather key market data. Netflix VP of content acquisition in Europe Kelly Merryman said last week, With the purchase of series, we look at what does well on piracy sites. The data contributed to Netflix picking up the popular TV series Prison Break.

CEO Reed Hastings hasn't been blind to the trend, recently affirming that "torrenting," or downloading of the pirated files, is popular globally. He said Netflix is aiming to position itself as an alternative to pirating, making content easier and legal to access.

Shares of Netflix are up 0.9 percent early Monday.
