Netflix (NFLX) Keeps the Original Content Flowing

April 30, 2013 12:10 PM EDT
Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) is trying to keep the original series hits coming and the stock running.

Today the streaming video giant announced that it will premiere its upcoming original series "Orange is the New Black" on Thursday, July 11, 2013.

"Orange is the New Black" follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex (Laura Prepon) results in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiance Larry (Jason Biggs) for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes and form unexpected new alliances with a group of eccentric and outspoken inmates. The series' diverse ensemble also includes Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning. All thirteen one-hour episodes in the series will be available at launch. The series is produced by Lionsgate Television for Netflix.

"Orange is the New Black" follows other original content for Netflix, which includes political thriller "House of Cards", and recently launched "Hemlock Grove".

Commenting on the impact of the original content in its latest quarterly letter to investors, CEO Reed Hasting said: "The global viewing and high level of engagement with the show (House of Cards) increased our confidence in our ability to pick shows Netflix members will embrace and to pick partners skilled at delivering a great series. The high level of viewer satisfaction implies we are able to target the right audience without the benefit of existing broadcast or cable viewing data and the strong viewing across all our markets gives us faith in our ability to create global content brands in a cost-effective, efficient way."

Netflix also said they saw very little free-trial gaming on the original series, something investors were worried about. Less than 8,000 people did this, out of millions of free trials in the quarter, Netflix said.

Up next for Netflix is the long-awaited and much-anticipated fourth season of comedy cult favorite Arrested Development, with all 15 episodes available on May 26.

Shares of Netflix are up 0.7 percent Tuesday to $216.40.
