Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) is contemplating a bid for NYSE Euronext to avoid being left out in the cold, according to a report on Wednesday citing a source familiar with the matter, as traditional exchanges are looking to merge in an attempt to circumvent electronic upstarts.
Nasdaq's options include partnering with IntercontinentalExchange Inc. (NYSE: ICE) or the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (NASDAQ: CME) to pull away NYSE from its $10.2 billion takeover deal by Deutsche Boerse.
Shares of Nasdaq are down 23 cents to $27.77 in premarket trade on Wednesday, while shares of NYSE are up 21 cents to $36.87.
