The U.S. is moving forward with its Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) investigation slowly, but surely.

The Detroit News observed today a letter from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent to Tesla on November 27th. The administration requested that Tesla turnover all consumer complaints, field reports, warranty claims, and property damage claims as it continues its probe into recent battery fires.

The letter, from NHTSA vehicle integrity chief D. Scott Yon, said in part, Describe in detail all possible consequences to the vehicle from an impact to the subject component that damages the battery. Describe in detail how these possible consequences were addressed in the design of the (Model S) and the limits of that design to prevent damage to the propulsion battery, stalling and fires.

Tesla is expected to produce a response before January 14, 2014.

Along with the above documents, the NHTSA wants to know whether Tesla made any modifications to the battery pack design, material, or installation to address any potential defect in the structure which would allow the deflection of road debris to lead to a fire. Any planned changes on the vehicle over the next three to four months are also asked to be submitted.

The NHTSA is also requesting detailed reports of the Model S sedans at the time of the incidents, vehicle owner contact information, and any communication with the owners or regional officers following the incidents.

Shares of Tesla are indicated higher in early trading Tuesday.
