Mulally Out as Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Candidate, But Board Nears Decision

January 8, 2014 7:48 AM EST
As announced Tuesday night, Ford's (NYSE: F) Alan Mulally put to rest rumors that he would leave the auto giant for the CEO role at Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT).

But, Microsoft is said to be nearing the end of its CEO search. Reuters reported that Microsoft's board is down to a handful of candidates.

While Mulally never previously denied interest in the job, the market chatter overshadowed several of Ford's key launches, including the redesigned 2014 Mustang. It was also said that several large Microsoft investors were campaigning to have Mulally as the next CEO.

Other potential considerations have been Ford's Alan Mulally and former Nokia chief Stephen Elop. Internal candidates include Tony Bates, Satya Nadella, and Kevin Turner.

Shares of Microsoft are lower in early trading Wednesday.
