Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), one of the two remaining large independent investment banks following the collapse of Bear and Lehman and sale of Merrill, is under heavy pressure today ahead of Q3 results from the company tomorrow. Shares are down 16%, a new 52-week and multi-year low, but off the day's lows.

Rival Goldman Sachs, which is considered the strongest in the group, reported results this morning. Goldman reported better-than-expected results on the bottom line but lower-than-expected results on the top line, but profits sank 70% in the quarter and revenue was down nearly 50%.

On average, analysts expect Morgan Stanley to reports EPS of $0.78 and revenues of $6.32 billion. Analysts also see more write-downs related to souring assets.

Morgan Stanley's credit-default swaps, which provide protection to bondholders against a default, are on the rise.
