Is that a 7.85-inch iPad in your laboratory, or are you just happy to see me?

Both, actually.

According to a podcast from Daring Fireball (DFB), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is currently working on a smaller version of its mega-hot iPad tablet device (MHITD). The comment was made by DFBs John Gruber, who said he does know that Apple has a 7.85-inch iPad in the labs "that runs at 1024×768…it’s just like the regular iPad shrunk down a bit." He cites several folks in the know on the source.

Can't wait for a mini-iPad and want to experience the tininess for yourself? Take a screenshot as a regular iPad as its in "portrait mode" (i.e. - vertical) and then flip that screenshot on its side (a.k.a. - horizontal).

Rumors of a smaller iPad from Apple have been circulating for a while, with a little more fuel issued just a few weeks ago by Digitimes.

Shares of Apple are indicated for a lower open Thursday.
