Stocks in the mobile device sector are mixed today, led by giant Sprint (NYSE: S), whose shares are up about 5% to $4.47 in afternoon trading. Sprint announced that they would be carrying the Samsung Intercept after the market yesterday, which may have investors cheering today. Samsung was ranked as the top OEM in the U.S. by comScore (Nasdaq: SCOR) today, with a 22.4% market share. The device will also use Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS, which gained 4% of market share to end up at 13% for May.
Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) is trading down 2.5% to $8.52. Reports in the Wall Street Journal claim that Nokia has asked Russian police to recover a stolen prototype of their N8 phone from Moscow-based blogger, Eldar Murtazin. The blogger says that he was given it, but Nokia disagrees, particularly after the blogger wrote a less-than-flattering review of the phone. The story echoes that of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), who saw their new iPhone on the pages of a popular gadget blog months before they were scheduled to debut the device.
Apple is flattish today, trading just 0.74% lower to $256.74. Shares have been up and down through the last month, reaching just about $275 and falling to below $245. Apple released their long awaited iPhone 4 over that period to much accolade, and the white version of the phone is expected to ship later this month, due to manufacturing difficulties that Apple experienced through production of the device. comScore has Apple with a 24.4% OS market share in the U.S. for the month of May.
Finally, AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) are hanging tough today, up just slightly into the green. AT&T is 0.45% higher to $24.44, and Verizon is 0.23% higher to $26.58. Verizon also got a Samsung device today, the N150 Netbook, and no real big news is out for AT&T today.
