According to research from Gartner (NYSE: IT), worldwide mobile application sales are expected to increase 190% from $5.2 billion in FY10 to $15.1 billion in FY11. Revs include the cost of some apps as well as ad revenues that the apps will generate for their developers.

Total mobile app downloads are expected to increase at a slightly slower click, from 8.2 billion in FY10 to 17.7 billion in FY11, a 117% jump. Gartner also sees over 185 billion downloads in 2014 from the launch of the first one in 2008.

Of the total downloads, free apps are expected to account for 81% of the total, but Gartner expects that this will decline until 2012, in which the percentage will grow again through 2014.

Stores expected to benefit from the increase in apps include: Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) App Store, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android Market, Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) Ovi Store, Research in Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) App World, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Marketplace, and Samsung Apps.
