Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is virtually all smiles Friday as Skype is hitting new records and doing so in a big way.

International phone traffic for Skype grew five percent to 490 billion minutes in 2012, rather slow by broader standards. But, voice and video traffic rose 44 percent to 167 billion minutes last year.

Telegeography notes that the 51 billion minute increase is "more than twice that achieved by all international carriers in the world, combined." The firm also noted that, "if Skype’s traffic were added to the volume of international phone calls, international voice traffic would have grown 13 percent in 2012."

Into the open, Microsoft is indicated higher.
