Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 9 Debut Expected in Q215

May 16, 2014 11:04 AM EDT

While adaptation of Windows 8 has been extremely underwhelming, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is already putting the pegs in place to release its successor soon.

According to market reports,, Windows 9 might be released in Q215. Codenamed 'Threshold,' Microsoft is said to offer a preview of the operating system beginning next February, with a tentative release date in April 2015.

What to expect is anyone's question. The Siri-like Cortana voice assistant might have fuller integration into Windows 9. The user interface might get an overhaul and simpler ways to switch between a tablet and a PC could happen.

(We'd like to think that Microsoft might just move the entire operating system into the cloud. The progression of the company has been heading in that direction for some time (Office365 is a great example of the effort) and it would make sense; users would be able to have the same interface on their desktop, smartphone, and tablet. No need to save and send files, they'd all be right there.)

Of course, Microsoft might just save that idea for Windows 10.

Shares of Microsoft are lower Friday.
