Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 8.1 Sees Strong Adaption with Key User Base

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8.1 might not have an ultra-widespread footprint quite yet, having just been released last October, but the operating system (OS) is making an impact with one of its key segments.

Microsoft-News, citing recent data from online game platform Steam, that the most popular OS being used by gamers is Windows 8.1 (x86/X64). In total, about 6.3 percent of users were on the new OS in November, which is a 5 percent jump from the October number. That amounts to more users than those on Linux, Mac, and Microsoft Windows Vista.

Of course, the large majority of users still run Windows 7, which has about 64.4 percent market share in all.

Users on Windows 8/8.1 now account for 18.1 percent of the total, while Windows XP is down to 6.5 percent.

Given that Microsoft Windows 8.1 is said to be a vast improvement over the base Windows 8 platform, we suspect these numbers will jump much higher over the next year. Shares of Microsoft are down 0.4 percent Tuesday morning.
