Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 8.1 Passes XP on Noted Gaming Site

January 2, 2014 11:59 AM EST
Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8.1 is just months old, but its making some big strides with a key user group.

TheNextWeb (TNW) pointed out Thursday that Microsoft Windows 8.1 has 8.83 percent of the Steam user base, while Windows 8 is at 11.14 percent and Windows XP is at 6.35 percent. That puts Windows 8.1 ahead of Windows XP for the first time ever.

Also of note is the duration between the two Windows 8 operating systems surpassing Windows XP; Windows 8 attained the feat in six months, about twice as long as Windows 8.1, though it might not be a flat comparison given that Microsoft recently announced it would stop supporting Windows XP.

Apple's OS X saw a 0.2 percentage point increase in December to 3.68 percent.
