Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is expected to launch its next generation of Windows sometime in 2012, though the actual timing of the launch has been up for debate.
According to some sources Thursday, the beta version of Microsoft's new, tablet-friendly Windows 8 will commence at the end of February.
The tech website TNW previously speculated Windows 8 might be released in June. Given new information, however, the site now believes that estimate is a little too optimistic.
Still, a group of tech heads remain which largely expect Windows 8 to make it into consumers hands sometime in the second half of 2012.
With Nokia (NYSE: NOK) almost betting the bank on the Windows Phone and it's next-generation operating system, investors might want to focus on upcoming milestones as the Windows 8 launch nears.
Whether Windows 8 will be a run-away hit on a tablet or mobile device is yet to be seen. Those curious about further progress can check updates on the Microsoft engineer's Windows 8 build blog here.
Microsoft shares are down about 0.9 percent on Thursday's session.
