Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is lower on the session following a solid post-earnings run this week. Litigation news could also provide more upside for the venerable software giant.
Reports out Friday have Microsoft topping Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) in the first of two Motorola Mobility patent trials. U.S. District Judge James Robart in Seattle said Microsoft owed just a fraction of royalties sought in the case.
Motorola claimed use of its wireless and video technology without licensing in Microsoft's popular Xbox gaming console. In the case, Motorola was looking for licensing of about $4 billion per year, while Microsoft felt $1 million per year might be more appropriate. Judge Robart thought $1.8 million would be sufficient.
News comes following Google's move to acquire Motorola last year in a deal valued at $12.5 billion. The purchase was made mainly on acquiring patents which would protect Google and its Android ecosystem further.
There is another trial between the two tech giants set for the summer. In the case, Microsoft says Motorola breached air terms of standard essential patent licenses.
Microsoft is down about 1 percent Friday, but still up about 9.7 percent ahead of the company's Q3 earnings report on April 18th.
