As Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is making headlines Tuesday with the acquisition of Waze, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) isn't content to sit on the sidelines.

According to a blog post today, Microsoft said it added about 270 terabytes of Bird's Eye imagery to Bing Maps. The company said the amount of data was the equivalent of 100,000 DVDs.

Since inception, Microsoft said it has published "a total of 1,452,958 sq km, or half a petabyte of data, of Bird's Eye scenes from around the world."

Though Microsoft doesn't have remote cars driving around at all times to get the latest imagery of an area from the ground, its updates to Bird's Eye might attract a "flock" of new interest. Shares are down 1.6 percent on the session.
