Microsoft (MSFT) Toys with Low-Cost/No-Cost Version of Windows 8.1

February 28, 2014 9:14 AM EST
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might finally be caving when it comes to retaining a strong presence in the global PC market.

TheVerge reported Friday that Microsoft is experimenting with a few version of Windows 8.1, which may have a strong integration of its Bing search engine. The operating system might be free, or come at a lower cost than current Windows operating systems.

While the news is strong and nothing is final yet, Microsoft investors would probably like to see a similar tactic being used with mobile devices. The PC market, while still shrinking, will likely hit a wall as many people still enjoy using a desktop along with whatever mobile device they choose (smartphone, tablet...PDA?).

Still, Microsoft needs to step its game up and allow handset makers to offer lower-cost Windows Phone 8.x-equipped devices to penetrate further into both the consumer and enterprise markets.

Shares of Microsoft are flat in early trading Friday.
