Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might have actually come out the gaming console winner in December.

According to the latest data from NPD, Microsoft's Xbox One outpaced Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 4 (PS4) in U.S. sales last month. Data points to U.S. Xbox One sales of 908,000 units, with an added 643,000 unit sales of Xbox 360 thrown in for good measure.

It wasn't made immediately clear what Sony's total last month was, through it recently touted shipping 4.2 million PS4 unit in 2013. (The console launched a week before Xbox One in mid-November. Microsoft also previously said it sold 3 million Xbox One units last year. Sony's PS4 has been available in 50+ markets, while Xbox One was launched in about 13.) One Sony executive commented on the numbers, saying the company sold all units available in the U.S. and were out-of-stock due to overwhelming demand.

Shares of Sony and Microsoft are both lower in early trading. Friday.
