Microsoft (MSFT) Takes Stand Against Advertisers: Adds 'Do-Not-Track' to IE9

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) is siding with the consumer after years of heated debate with advertisers and marketers: you will now be able to block your personal browsing data in the newest version of their Internet Explorer web browser.

According to reports, Microsoft's new Internet Explorer, version 9, will include a do-not-track tool, keeping online habits from being monitored.

IE9 will also have "tracking protection lists," preventing snooping from specific Web-tracking companies.

Of course, as might be expected, the system may not block all browsing habits. The WSJ notes that IE9 sends out a request to sites, asking that a users data not be tracked. The system only works if the site agrees to the request. So far, n site have agreed to participate publicly.

Google, which offers users their Chrome browser, has a download available called "Keep My Opt-Outs," which also requests that user data not be used for targeted ads.

Currently, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) Safari does not offer such a feature. No word is out from Apple yet on whether or not an option will be available in the near future.

The moves come as many anticipate that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission will begin working to further privacy protections.
