Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is making a change in roles for one of its long-time executives as it looks to alter its direction moving forward.

According to AllThingsD, former research and strategy chief Craig Mundie has now been given the title of Senior Advisor to the CEO. ATD noted that Mundie will work on strategic projects as well as "government and business leaders around the world on technology policy, regulation and standards,"

Technical strategy chief Eric Rudder will assume much of Mundie's day-to-day duties.

In an internal memo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer also said Mundie plans to retire in 2014, when he will reach the age of 65.

Mundie has been at Microsoft for years, having served as technical assistant to co-founder Bill Gates, Server and Tools head, and shifted into his current role back in 2006.

Shares of Microsoft are 1.5 percent lower on the session.
