Microsoft (MSFT) Plans 'Robust' Expansion into Original, Interactive TV (NFLX) (CSTR)

Traders are keeping an eye on Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Coinstar (Nasdaq: CSTR) today as another rather large entrant might be thinking about creating original streaming programming.

Reports out Tuesday have Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) planning to produce premium, interactive TV shows for its Xbox Live platform.

Entertainment and Digital Media President at Microsoft Nancy Tellem said the company is looking to utilize the Kinect device more with upcoming programming plans. She said Microsoft has a "robust" content production schedule planned and Tellem's unit already employs 125 people.

It won't be interactive "for interactive sake," Tellem noted. Examples include live TV and children's shows, where kids would be able to interact with characters on screen.

Over the last few years, Microsoft has added about 100 content partners for Xbox Live, bolstering content for its now 46 million subscriber base.

Comments were made at AllThingsD's Dive into Media event.

Amid the chatter, both Netflix and Coinstar are in positive territory Tuesday.
