Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) next Windows 8.1 update -- Update 1 -- will make the operating system more friendly for non-touchscreen users.

It was cautioned that the feature is still in development and Microsoft might alter it before Update 1 ships.

Other parts of Windows 8.1 that Microsoft is working it address include shutdown and search buttons on the Start Screen, pinning Metro-style tiles to the desktop task bar, and a new bar at the top of Metro apps which will allow users to minimize, close and snap apps.

Shares of Microsoft are up in early trading Friday.
