According to IHS Screen Digest News, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) trumped their Kinect sales expectation for 2010 due to heavy marketing investment, differentiated technology, and a willing user base. They originally set their worldwide forecast at only 5 million, but exceeded that with 8 million sold to retail channels by January 4, 2011 and actual consumers worldwide consuming 6.36 million by the end of 2010.
The Kinect outperformed Sony's (NYSE: SNE) Move Controllers which posted a sell-through figure of 5.23 million by the end of 2010. This was made up of types, stand along, starter kits (which includes a camera), and as part of a console bundle. IHS estimates that, "sell-through enabled 4.26 million PS3s to play Move content on a worldwide basis, as more than one Move controller can be used by a single console."
